CSS
What is CSS?
CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, is a stylesheet language used to describe the presentation of a document written in a markup language like HTML. CSS is used to control the styling and layout of web pages, and can be used to create a consistent look and feel across multiple pages on a website.
First developed in the early 1990s, CSS greatly improved the appearance of web pages. Before CSS, developers had to use a variety of different techniques to control the styling of a web page, including using HTML elements and attributes to control font sizes, colors, and other styles. This often resulted in messy and difficult-to-maintain code.
With CSS, developers could create style rules that could be applied to multiple elements on a page, making it easier to create consistent styling across an entire website. CSS also allowed developers to separate the content of a web page from its presentation.
The first version of CSS, known as CSS1, was released in 1996. This version included basic styling capabilities, such as the ability to control fonts, colors, and margins. Over time, CSS has been updated and expanded with new features and capabilities. The latest version of CSS, CSS3, was released in 2011 and includes a wide range of new features, such as support for animations, transitions, and media queries.
Today, CSS is an essential part of web development and is used by millions of developers around the world to create beautiful and engaging websites. It continues to evolve and improve, and new features are regularly added to keep pace with the ever-changing landscape of the web.
How to Get Started With CSS?
To begin, you need to create a stylesheet that defines the style rules you want to apply to your HTML document. This stylesheet is typically saved in a separate file with a .css extension, and is linked to your HTML document using the <link>
element.
Once you have created your stylesheet, you can apply styles to your HTML elements using CSS selectors. A CSS selector is a pattern that matches one or more elements on an HTML page, and allows you to apply styles to those elements. For example, you could use a selector to apply styles to all of the <h1>
elements on a page, or to all of the elements with a specific class or ID attribute.
Here is an example of a simple CSS stylesheet that defines some style rules for an HTML page:

In addition to creating stylesheets and linking them to your HTML documents, there are a few other ways you can use CSS to apply styles to your web pages.
One way to use CSS is to include the styles directly in your HTML document using the <style>
element. This allows you to define your styles in the same document as your content, rather than in a separate stylesheet file. Here is an example of how you might use the <style>
element to apply styles to an HTML page:

Another way to use CSS is to apply styles directly to individual HTML elements using the style
attribute. This allows you to apply styles to a specific element on your page, rather than to a group of elements that match a selector. Here is an example of how you might use the style

There's also an @import
rule in CSS allows you to import style rules from other stylesheets into a single stylesheet. This can be useful if you want to reuse the same styles across multiple pages on a website, or if you want to modularize your styles to make them easier to manage.
To use the @import
rule, you need to add it at the top of your stylesheet, followed by the URL of the stylesheet you want to import. Here is an example of how you might use the @import
rule to import styles from another stylesheet:

/* This is the stylesheet for the homepage */

In this example, the @import
rule is used to import three stylesheets: styles-shared.css
, styles-home.css

. These stylesheets will be combined with the styles defined in the main stylesheet to create the final styles for the website.
One thing to keep in mind when using the @import
rule is that it can affect the performance of your website because it causes the browser to load multiple stylesheets. This can be especially problematic if you have a large number of stylesheets or if you are importing from other websites.
To avoid performance issues, it is generally best to use the @import
rule sparingly and only when it is necessary. For example, you might use it to import a few shared stylesheets that are used across multiple pages on your website, but you should avoid importing large stylesheets or stylesheets from other websites. Instead, you can use the <link>
element to link to your stylesheets, which allows the browser to load them asynchronously and can improve the performance of your website.
What Else Can CSS Do?
Not only is CSS useful to control the appearance of your web pages, you can also use it to create interactive and dynamic effects on your pages. With CSS, you can use animations and transitions to add motion and visual interest to your page, and you can use media queries to create responsive designs that adjust to different screen sizes and devices.
Here is an example of how you might use CSS to create an animation on an HTML page:

In this CSS, the <h1>
elements on the page will have a font size of 24 pixels by default. However, if the screen width is less than 500 pixels, the styles in the media query will override the default styles and make the <h1>
elements smaller. This allows the design of the page to adapt to different screen sizes and devices.
Most commonly, media queries are utilized by developers to alter a website's layout between mobile and desktop sizes to best present the content depending on the screen size.
